Shelby Nicole

Editor

I’m an editor, writer, and reader. I have a passion for young adult fiction and middle grade fiction. I especially love fantasy. I majored in an English BA, with a concentration in creative writing. I hold an IACET-accredited certificate for proofreading and copyediting.I will edit:

  • middle grade fiction (ages 8-12)

  • young adult fiction (ages 13-18)

  • fantasy

  • contemporary fiction

  • Christian fiction

  • romance fiction

Shelby did a fantastic job copyediting my novel. She took time to be thorough and found many errors that I had missed in my own editing. She is extremely knowledgeable, and I learned a lot of grammar from her comments, which has improved my writing. I'm very happy with the work she did on my manuscript and would highly recommend her.

What are the different types of editing? It’s important to understand that there are different types of editing. Some editors provide only one type of editing, while other editors provide more than one type. Sometimes the different types of editing can overlap or have similarities to each other. But generally speaking, in traditional publishing, these are the different stages of the editing process:Writing ⟶ Developmental editing ⟶ Line editing ⟶ Copyediting ⟶ ProofreadingDevelopmental editing
The developmental editor provides feedback on the “big picture” editing, which involves plot structure, characterization, and other story elements. This helps to really put the story together.
Line editing
The line editor provides feedback on the writing style, language use, and clarity. Does the sentence make sense? Is the sentence’s meaning clear or unclear? The line editor checks for repetitiveness and wordiness, redundancies, confusing language, tense shifts, run-on sentences, and paragraphs that need to be tightened. The line editor helps to improve the readability and the flow of the manuscript.
Copyediting
The copy editor corrects errors in spelling, punctuation, and grammar. A copy editor ensures consistency in spelling, capitalization, hyphenation, and numerals. They also fact-check for incorrect statements.
Proofreading
Proofreading is the final step in the editing process before publication. The proofreader checks for any missed typos and overlooked grammatical errors. The proofreader also works on the formatting and layout of the manuscript.
For a more in-depth explanation of the different types of editing, you can read my blog post here.

What kind of editing services do I provide?I both copyedit and line edit each manuscript. I don’t separate the two types of editing; I combine them by doing both at the same time. I provide one rounding of editing, which means I edit the entire manuscript all the way through one time. For copyediting and line editing, I will:

  • correct errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation

  • correct errors in word usage, verb tense, and sentence structure

  • minor fact-check for accuracy of terms used

  • correct paragraphing

  • correct bad line breaks and hyphenation

  • check for inconsistencies

  • check for clarity and conciseness

Please note:

  • I don’t provide developmental editing.

  • I only accept Microsoft Word documents.

  • I work with U.S. English.

  • I follow the Chicago Manual of Style, 18th edition.

  • I also consult The Chicago Guide to Copyediting Fiction.

  • I don’t edit paranormal or supernatural, horror, thrillers, murder mysteries, or erotica.

When I have finished editing your work, you will receive 2 Microsoft Word documents:

  • Tracked Changes: This Word document will be your edited manuscript showing all of the corrections I made with Tracked Changes visible, which allows you to accept or reject my changes, plus comments explaining those changes.

  • Style Sheet: This Word document explains the edits I made according to the Chicago Manual of Style. It includes a list that outlines guidelines regarding grammar and punctuation. A style sheet is also an overview of the manuscript, containing a list of the characters, a list of the locations, a timeline of events in the plot, and word lists of unusual spellings for names and terms used in the manuscript.
